Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My! 4/9/09

The important news of the day is that the economy stinks, the Koreans are launching missiles, the British are upset about their Queen being improperly touched and Hannah Montana might be giving up her blond wig forever. Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!

Fear is a terrible thing my friends and yet the media uses it as it's most precious marketing tool.
The more gore they can get out of a story and the more fear they can instill in it's audience the happier the media is. Our children are growing up with role models (or so they say they are) that don't wear underwear, come on, what is that?

I am by no means a prude and I like a good bawdy joke on occasion but I think it is going too far how much uncensored information is out there for our kids to see, hear and read about.
As Moms we really have our hands full with trying to raise kids that are respectful, polite or just plain kind!

I know we can't shelter our kids totally from what is happening in the world but you can't let them know just how bad some things are either. What on Earth should we tell them about their future?

"Well dear, your college funds have disappeared, there are no jobs out there, we might have to live together forever and oh yeah, forget about the big white wedding."
"Yeah, what about no Scott"! (That quote is from an Austin Powers movie). I believe it is our job to raise our kids with optimism, joy and the feeling that they are loved and safe, no matter what the situation may be.

Let us not dwell on the past and how or why so many things went wrong or focus on the future and how scary it looks. Let's focus on right NOW! Just deal with what is right now and breathe. Don't forget to breathe! Then smile, even if you don't have any reason to smile, do it anyway it will make you feel better!

I'm not saying that we should tune out the world or become passive about things that are wrong, I just think that worrying or being afraid of everything is not going to help anyone! Let's take one step at a time with our own well being and that of our children and spouses as well. That way if we need to react to something we will have the strength and the clear mindedness to do so. Prioritize what is worth your attention and what is not!

Let's not worry about Hannah Montana's future too much, I'm sure that she'll be fine!
